The Shower Your Contractor Built — Two Ways to Waterproof It Right, and Why One Costs More Than Material Alone

I just finished a shower install with Durock and RedGard for a customer in Venice. It’s a solid, code-compliant build. But when I quote a shower, I offer two ways to build the wall’s waterproofing plane: Durock with a liquid membrane, or Durock with a Kerdi sheet membrane over it. Neither is a lesser product — Durock is the substrate either way, and the membrane over it is what actually stops water. The price difference between the two comes down almost entirely to labor, and I want to walk through why.

One thing that doesn’t change regardless of which wall tier you choose: the shower pan itself is always built with Kerdi. I don’t tier the pan.

The Facts — Up Front

USG states plainly in their own product FAQ that Durock cement board is “water durable but not waterproof” — a separate waterproofing membrane has to go over it. That’s not a knock on the product. It’s the manufacturer telling you how to use it correctly. Cement board is the substrate. The membrane is what actually stops water.

The TCNA Handbook — the industry standard for tile installation — requires a waterproofing membrane over the cement board before tile goes on. There’s no accepted method that approves bare Durock with nothing over it. If a contractor tiles directly over cement board with no membrane at all, that’s not a Durock problem — that’s a contractor problem. It isn’t built to any recognized standard.

Kerdi requires that same ANSI A118.10 waterproofing performance — it just gets there differently. Instead of a liquid coating applied in coats, it’s a sheet membrane where every seam, corner, and penetration is individually taped, embedded in thinset, and mechanically bonded.

The material cost between the two is close. The real difference is labor — and that’s where the premium comes from.

Durock + RedGard vs. Durock + Kerdi: Two Wall Tiers, Same Standard

Durock + Liquid Membrane (RedGard, Hydroban, or similar)

This is what I just installed, and it’s the solid-standard wall tier I build most often. Cement board goes up over the studs, taped and thinset at the seams like drywall. Then a liquid waterproofing membrane — RedGard in my case — gets rolled on in two coats, in opposing directions, at the coverage rate the manufacturer specifies. Reinforcing fabric gets embedded at the inside corners and any transitions where movement happens. When the assembly calls for it, I flood-test it before a single tile goes up.

Done this way, it meets ANSI A118.10, same as Kerdi. It’s a legitimate, code-compliant, professional system.

Schluter-Kerdi

Kerdi is a different process entirely. Instead of a liquid coating, you’re working with an 8-mil sheet membrane that has to be individually cut, fitted, and bonded to every surface with thinset — walls, floor, curb, all of it. Every seam where two sheets meet needs a minimum 2-inch overlap, fully embedded in thinset with no air pockets. Every inside corner needs a prefabricated Kerdi-Kereck-F piece or a Kerdi-Band strip, lapped and embedded the same way. Every pipe penetration — valve, showerhead, anything coming through the wall — needs its own Kerdi-Seal piece (Kerdi-Seal-PS or -MV, depending on the fixture) integrated into the membrane, not just caulked around.

That’s the labor difference. A liquid membrane gets rolled on in broad strokes across a wall. A Kerdi install is built piece by piece, seam by seam, with every transition individually treated. It takes longer, it takes more attention to detail, and it costs more in labor for exactly that reason.

What that labor buys you: the waterproof plane in a Kerdi system is inspectable before tile goes on. You can see every seam, every corner, every penetration seal, and know it’s done. With a liquid membrane, you’re trusting that the coats were applied correctly at the right coverage — which is why a flood test matters so much on those jobs.

What Goes Wrong — With Either System

Durock systems fail when the membrane step gets skipped or shortcut. The most common mistake I see in this area isn’t a bad Durock install — it’s cement board with nothing over it at all, or a liquid membrane applied in a single thin coat instead of two. Manufacturers specify two full coats at the proper coverage rate. A single coat doesn’t meet spec and won’t perform like a properly built system.

Kerdi systems fail at the details that get rushed. An unfilled seam lap, a corner that wasn’t properly treated with a Kerdi-Kereck piece, a penetration sealed with caulk instead of the Schluter seal product — those are the failure points. Because the whole system depends on every seam being individually done right, a rushed Kerdi install can actually underperform a well-executed Durock + membrane job. The premium only pays off if the labor is done correctly.

Homeowner Self-Check — Questions to Ask Your Contractor

“What waterproofing method are you using, and does it meet ANSI A118.10?” Both a correctly applied liquid membrane and Kerdi meet this standard. If the answer is “we’re just using cement board” with nothing else mentioned, that’s the red flag — not the brand of membrane, the absence of one entirely.

“If it’s a liquid membrane, how many coats, and at what coverage rate?” Two coats minimum, applied at the manufacturer’s specified coverage rate. One coat isn’t enough.

“Are you doing a flood test before tile goes up?” Applies to both systems, when the assembly calls for it. A contractor confident in their waterproofing generally won’t hesitate to flood test it and let you see the result before tile covers it up.

Warning Signs in an Existing Shower

Regardless of which system was used, the same warning signs apply: hollow-sounding tile when tapped, grout discoloration at floor-to-wall corners, caulk that keeps failing in the same spot, a musty smell that returns after cleaning, or any softness in the floor near the drain or curb. Any of these mean it’s worth having a licensed plumber take a look — the fix is far more manageable caught early than after the framing’s involved.

The Bottom Line

Durock paired with a properly applied liquid membrane is a legitimate, code-compliant system — it’s the wall tier I build most often. Kerdi is the premium option because of what goes into it: every seam taped and embedded, every corner individually treated, every penetration sealed with a purpose-built piece instead of a bead of caulk. That labor is what you’re paying for, and for some homeowners — especially on a shower they want built once and never touched again — that premium is worth it.

Either way, the question that matters isn’t which brand your contractor uses. It’s whether the waterproofing step happened at all, and whether it was done to the standard the material actually requires.
