What I Look For First

The first decision is access. I choose the most practical available way into the drain system — usually an outside cleanout when there’s a usable one — then run the camera and watch the line as it travels. I’m looking at what’s visible: pipe wall condition, standing water, buildup, offsets at joints, anything that explains the symptoms you called about. As I go, I show you the screen and explain the likely next steps.

Two honest limits. Not every line can be fully inspected — camera travel depends on the access point, pipe configuration, and what’s in the way. And not every issue is visible on camera. If I can’t get a clear look at a section, I tell you that rather than guessing.

Locating

I Show You What I Find and Mark the Line

You see the camera findings with me, in real time. Once the camera is at a point of interest, I use a Plumber’s Vision 512 Hz locator wand above ground to trace the camera signal. Based on the camera and locator findings, I mark the floor or ground at the approximate relevant location and the apparent path of the pipe.

What the mark is not: exact depth, a surveyed location, a legal utility locate, or an indication of other buried lines. It relates only to the plumbing line the camera is in, and it reflects site conditions that day. If a repair follows, the marked path is a starting point for planning, not a substitute for verifying the location when the work is opened up.

Access

The Easiest Access: An Outside Cleanout

An accessible outside cleanout is often the easiest way to inspect a sewer line because it can provide a direct route into the drain system without disturbing an interior fixture. If your property has a usable one, that’s almost always where I start. I evaluate the actual access available, and I don’t advise customers to open a cleanout themselves.

If There Is No Usable Outside Cleanout

Plenty of properties don’t have an outside cleanout, or have one that’s buried, damaged, or poorly placed for the camera. In those cases, removing a toilet can be a legitimate professional access route in some properties. It’s evaluated case by case. Toilet removal and reset is not included in the $325 camera-and-locating service; if it’s required, it’s discussed and quoted separately before any work begins. It is not do-it-yourself work.

Why Roof-Vent Access Is Not the First Choice

Roof-vent access can be possible in some situations, but it’s usually more difficult and adds site and safety considerations. When an accessible cleanout or direct interior option is available, I generally evaluate those first. I may use roof-vent access when it is appropriate, but it is not my first choice when a cleaner or safer route is available.
